About

After years of living and working between Rhode Island, New York City and Los Angeles, artist Chris Wyllie has come home to Newport, Rhode Island. (Originally a Pawtucket native.)

Wyllie is best known for his public art installation, Happy Mural Project, that is populated throughout Los Angeles. His work is in the permanent collections of The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Fisher-Landau Center for Art, Gibson Guitar, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and many privately owned collections.

“He is now making his mark in Newport with massive, outdoor murals. The work is designed to instill a greater sense of creative modernity to the city and lend vibrancy and curb appeal to the businesses who have provided him their walls”, (Wendy Logan, Newport This Week)

Chris Wyllie’s work explores issues of beauty, desire and the legacy of a historic material culture. His command of the medium harnesses the energy of the discarded remnants and anchors them firmly in the moment and experience of the viewer.

Today, Wyllie has rooted himself back in Newport, Rhode Island where he has established his own sunlight studio located right off Spring Street. Patrons are encouraged to peek through the windows to view his works in progress. If the door is ajar, that is an open invitation to pop in and say Hi!
